Crews worked for hours to put out a large fire that tore through the sugar company's storage shed before spreading to a conveyor and into the refinery.

Baltimore firefighters worked for hours to get control of a three-alarm fire that erupted at Domino Sugar's large raw storage shed and spread to the company's sugar refinery Tuesday.

The fire broke out around 3 p.m. at the sugar company's refinery on the city's waterfront, the Baltimore Sun reports. When crews arrived, they could see flames shooting from the storage facility, and smoke and the smell of burnt sugar was heavy in the air.

Flames spread from the storage shed to a nearby conveyor belt, which brought the fire halfway into the refinery. Firefighters were forced to attack the fire from the outside because of intensity, and video from the scene showed a structure that collapsed because of the flames..

All the facility's workers were able to safely escape the fire, and no injuries were reported. Crews were able to get control of the fire after more than two hours at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
